To tell time in Mandarin, you need to know how to count and you need to add the equivalent of “o’clock,” 一 点 钟 Yī diǎn -  One o'clock  (hour o'clock)


  • 1: 一 点 (yī diǎn) 2: 二 点 (èr diǎn) 3: 三 点 (sān diǎn) 4: 四 点 (sì diǎn) 
  • 5: 五 点 (wǔ diǎn)  6: 六 点 (liù diǎn) 7: 七  点 (qī diǎn) 8: 八  点 (bā diǎn) 
  • 9: 九  点 (jiǔ diǎn) 10: 十  点 (shí diǎn) 11: 十一 点 (Shí yī diǎn) 12: 十二  点 (Shí èr diǎn)


To say “Nine twenty one minutes” 9:21 is 九 点 二十一 分 Jiǔ diǎn èrshíyī fēn

fēn = minutes


钟 Zhōng - TIME

一 秒 Yī miǎo  one second    一 分 Yī  fēn 1 minute  一 天 Yītiān

一 周b Yī zhōu one week  一 年 Yī nián

晚 Wǎn - Night
早 Zǎo - Morning
上 shàng  - on
天 Tiān - Day

晚 上 8 点 Wǎn shàng bā diǎn  - 8 pm, in the evening or in the night
早上 8 点  Zǎo shang bā diǎn - 8 am
