📞 How to Answer the Phone in Mandarin Chinese: A Quick Guide

Whether you're traveling, working, or just making a friend in China, knowing how to handle a phone call in Mandarin is super helpful! Here’s a simple guide to common phone call phrases and expressions used in Chinese conversations.

1. Answering the Phone

• 喂 (wéi) – "Hello/Hey"

This is the standard way to answer a phone call in Mandarin. When spoken in the second tone, "喂 (wéi)" is used only for answering the phone. It’s casual and widely used.

Want to sound a little more polite or formal? Use:

喂, 你好 (wéi, nǐ hǎo) – “Hello, how are you?”

2. Asking Who’s Calling

• 请问是哪位? (qǐng wèn shì nǎ wèi?)
"May I ask who’s speaking?" or simply “Who is this?”

This is a polite and formal way to ask who's on the other end.

You can also say:

请问你是...? (qǐng wèn nǐ shì…?) – “May I ask, who are you?”

To respond, just say:

我是… (wǒ shì...) – “I am…”

If you're answering on behalf of a business:

这是… (zhè shì…) – “This is…”

Example:
喂,你好,这是上海建筑公司 (wèi, nǐ hǎo, zhè shì Shànghǎi jiànzhù gōngsī)
“Hello, this is Shanghai Construction Company.”

3. Asking for Someone

• ...在吗? (...zài ma?) or
• ...在不在? (...zài bu zài?)
“Is ... there?”

If someone asks for a person:

  • 他在 / 她在 (tā zài) – He/She is here

  • 他不在 / 她不在 (tā bú zài) – He/She is not here

If they dialed the wrong number:

你打错了 (nǐ dǎ cuò le) – “You called the wrong number.”

4. Useful Expressions

• 请再说一遍 (qǐng zài shuō yí biàn) – “Please say that again.”
Even more polite:
不好意思,请再说一遍 (bù hǎo yì si, qǐng zài shuō yí biàn) – “Sorry, please say that again.”

• 等一下 (děng yí xià) – “Hold on a second.”
Need to call back? Say:
我马上再打给你 (wǒ mǎ shàng zài dǎ gěi nǐ) – “I’ll call you right back.”

• 需要留言吗? (xū yào liú yán ma?) – “Would you like to leave a message?”
To confirm the message:
对吗? (duì ma?) – “Is that right?”

5. Ending the Call

• 我没别的事了 (wǒ méi bié de shì le) – “That’s all / I don’t have anything else.”

• 我先挂了 (wǒ xiān guà le) – “I’ll hang up first.”

• 拜拜 (bái bái) – “Bye bye” (yes, just like English!)

6.  Where is my cellphone?

我 的   手机   在 哪 里?
Wǒ de shǒujī zài nǎ lǐ?

  • 手机  Shǒujī cell phone
  • 在 zài exit or be
  • 哪 nǎ where
  • 里 lǐ inside
Is your cell phone in there?
你 的  手机  在 里吗?
Nǐ de  shǒujī zài lǐ ma?

Your cell phone is here
你的   手机 在  这 里
Nǐ de shǒujī zài zhè lǐ

这 里 zhè lǐ here

📱 Final Tip

Phone etiquette in Chinese is polite and straightforward. If you’re respectful and clear, your conversations will go smoothly—even if your Mandarin isn't perfect yet. Keep practicing and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone!
