When you're learning Chinese, it's easy to mix up some words that seem similar in English — like student and classmate.

Let’s break it down:

👩‍🎓 Student = 学生 (xuéshēng)

This refers to anyone who studies, from preschool to university.

Example:
我是学生。
Wǒ shì xuéshēng.
I am a student.

👬 Classmate = 同学 (tóngxué)

This is someone who is in the same class as you.

Example:
我有三个新同学。
Wǒ yǒu sān gè xīn tóngxué.
I have three new classmates.

Even though both are related to school, they’re not interchangeable. Your tóngxué (classmates) are also xuéshēng (students), but not all students are your classmates.
