New 新 Xīn

新 (xīn)" – The Chinese Word for NEW

If you’re starting to learn Chinese, one of the most useful and positive words you’ll come across is 新 (xīn). It means "new" — and just like in English, it’s used to describe things that are fresh, recent, or beginning.

Examples:

新年快乐 (xīn nián kuài lè) – Happy New Year

新朋友 (xīn péng yǒu) – new friend

新工作 (xīn gōng zuò) – new job

新的一天 (xīn de yì tiān) – a new day

What does the character look like?

The character 新 is made up of parts:

The top part 亲 (qīn) can mean "close" or "family."

The bottom part 斤 (jīn) is the shape of an old tool (like an axe).

Together, they suggest something freshly made or newly created.

Why is this word important?

When you learn Chinese, everything feels new – new sounds, new writing, new ways of thinking. So it’s nice to start with a word like 新 that feels full of hope, change, and possibilities.

No matter what you’re starting — a new language, a new job, or a new day — remember:

> Every "新" is a chance to grow.
